Taking Care of Your Motorcycle Boots

A high quality pair of motorcycle boots is a great investment. When you find a pair that fits your feet and your budget, get them. A good pair of boots will last a lifetime and provide the extra protection you need when on rides. A great deal of motorcycle injuries concentrate on the feet, and boots will help reduce your risk of a serious injury. Besides being a riding essential, they are also a versatile part of your wardrobe, which is important for both men and women. When you do have a great pair of boots, make sure you treat them well. They will treat your more than well in return.

In order to provide the protection, support, and style you want, your boots should be leather. There is a reason why bikers wear leather: yes, it’s tough looking, but mostly it’s practical. When on a motorcycle, anything less will increase your risk of suffering severe injury in the event of a slip. When you purchase your boots, get the best quality that you can afford. You can easily find high quality leather boots for around $100, or even less. So, how do you take care of your leather boots to make sure they last as long as they should?

When you get your boots, you should ensure that they are waterproofed. This is easy with leather. Use an oil-based waterproofing product. Wax or silicone-based products clog the pores of your boots – yes, they have pores too. Make sure to oil the welts and seams thoroughly.

Clean them after you use them. When you’re done, take a cloth and wipe off any mud, dirt, water, or other debris that can get into the treads and onto the uppers. Use a brush to remove heavy dirt or mud and then use a slightly damp cloth to do the rest. Don’t use too much water, though, as this can ruin the leather.

If your boots become wet, don’t place them near a heater or in direct sunlight. This will crack the leather. Set them in a dry place. If you want to speed it up a bit, stuff them with newspaper. Make sure to replace the newspaper as it becomes wet.

If you start to notice an odor, sprinkle some baking soda inside. This will absorb the odor easily. If you have long periods in between rides, wear your boots periodically so they remain comfortable and stretched to your feet.

Once a year, recondition your boots. As you wear them, the oils will work their way out. A reconditioning oil puts them back in, which keeps the leather supple and keeps cracks from forming. When you purchase your boots, ask the vendor about which specific oils he recommends.

Caring for your boots will extend their lives, ensuring that they are as comfortable and functional in ten years (or even longer) as they are today. It doesn’t take a lot of time – and it will certainly save a lot of money. Instead of replacing your women’s or men’s motorcycle boots every year, you can just spend a few minutes cleaning or conditioning them.
